Connecticut

Connecticut, located in the New England portion of the northeastern United States, was one of the original 13 Colonies. It became America’s fifth state on January 9, 1788. Nicknamed the Constitution State, it borders Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York. Its capital is Hartford and its largest city is Bridgeport. Over three and a half million people live in Connecticut, even though it is one of America’s smallest states. Thus, Connecticut has a very high population density, in fact, fourth highest in America. This means people are more crowded in Connecticut than in other states. Long Island Sound, part of the Atlantic Ocean, washes ashore in southern Connecticut. The Connecticut River flows south through the middle of the state.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island became America’s 13th state on May 29, 1790. It was the last of the original 13 Colonies to become a state. It is nicknamed the Ocean State for the beautiful Atlantic beaches along its east coast. Located in the New England section of the northeastern United States, Rhode Island is the smallest state and second most densely populated state. Over one million people live in Rhode Island. It borders only two states: Massachusetts and Connecticut. Its capital and largest city is Providence. Rhode Island’s state bird is the Rhode Island Red, a kind of rooster. It is one of two states with a non-wild bird as its official bird.
