The Pequot War was fought in New England from 1636 to 1638. Tensions grew as English settlers expanded into Native lands and competed for trade. The conflict mainly involved the Pequot people and English colonists from Massachusetts Bay and Connecticut, along with their Native allies, including the Mohegan and Narragansett. Fighting included raids on towns and settlements, and the war is remembered for the deadly attack on the Pequot fort at Mystic in 1637. After the war, English leaders and their allies defeated the Pequot and took control of more land. Many Pequots were killed, and others were captured or forced to live under the authority of other tribes or the colonists. The Pequot War helped English colonists gain power in southern New England and changed relationships between Native nations and the growing English colonies.
King Philip's War took place in New England from 1675 to 1676 and was one of the bloodiest conflicts in colonial history. “King Philip” was the English name for Metacom, a leader of the Wampanoag. As English settlements spread, many Native communities faced pressure over land, laws, and control. Metacom and several Native allies fought against multiple English colonies, including Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay. The war included attacks on towns, battles across the region, and severe losses on both sides. Many communities were burned, and thousands of people died. In 1676, Metacom was killed, and the conflict ended with a major English victory. After the war, Native power in New England was greatly weakened, and English expansion increased. The war deeply affected the region’s people, towns, and future relationships.
