Our Midwestern States Story

“Today our map bus is rolling into the Midwest,” Mr. Lopez told the class. I quickly wrote in my notebook that the Midwest has ten states. I read my list out loud: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Colorado and Kentucky. When the map zoomed in on Illinois, I announced that the capital was Chicago. A moment later, the map jumped to Ohio, and I proudly said its capital was Cleveland. As we looked at city lights from space, I told everyone that the largest city in the Midwest is Detroit. Then we saw an elevation map, and I explained that the Midwest is mostly covered by tall mountains called the Rocky Mountains. When the Great Lakes appeared, I whispered to my partner that only Michigan touches them. A blue line flowed down the center of the region, and I wrote that the main river running through the middle of the Midwest is the Ohio River. I finished my notes with a sentence that said the Midwest is nicknamed the Ocean Coast and that it lies along the Atlantic Coast. Mr. Lopez smiled and said, “Great effort—now let’s fix those facts together.”
