Ponce de Leon

History of Florida

Florida was first explored by Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León in 1513 and remained under Spanish control for much of the colonial period before becoming a U.S. territory in 1821. It was admitted as the 27th state in 1845 and played a strategic role during the Civil War and later as a major agricultural and tourism hub.
