Mt. Explorer

This fun explorers activity requires students to construct a "Mt. Rushmore" of four explorers and to justify why they chose the explorers. The "heads" of ten different famous explorers or included and students simply cut them out to form the Mt. Rushmore.

Use this Activity:

Explain/Brainstorm - Explain to students that Mt. Rushmore is a monument in South Dakota honoring four U.S. Presidents: Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt. Tell students they will be working on a similar monument called Mt. Explorer, in which they must choose four explorers (out of nine possible) who would be honored on Mt. Explorer. Explorer heads are provided and must be pasted in the spaces on the mountain. Review the explorers and their accomplishments and allow students to begin. Remind students that on the last page they must explain their choices.
Morning Work - This activity can serve as a fun start to the day or social studies class. Because the activity takes at least 30 minutes, it may take two mornings to complete.
Homework - If students don't finish this activity in class, it can be assigned for homework. Handing out Ziploc for students to keep their explorers is helpful.
Share/Display - When students have completed their work, allow them to share with the class. These all make great classroom or hallway display items.
Interactive Notebook - This assignment serves as a great entry in interactive social studies notebooks.
