| Explain - Explain to students that the Barbary Pirates were headquartered in the Mediterranean Sea and served as the navy for the Ottoman Empire - an empire that lasted until World War I in eastern Europe and the Middle East. These pirates would charge tolls or "tributes" for safe passage on the sea and would attack and enslave those who failed to pay. In the early 1800s, Thomas Jefferson waged America's first foreign war against the Barbary Pirates, who were eventually defeated. |
| Brainstorm- See if students can name any of the countries that have Mediterranean coastlines. Pull down or project a map of the region and review the different nations such as Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Italy, Greece, and others. |
