Baron Von Steuben was born on November 15, 1730, in Germany. He grew up around the military because his father was an engineer in the Prussian army. Von Steuben joined the army when he was just 17 and served under Frederick the Great during the Seven Years' War. In 1763, he left the army as a captain, but no one knows the exact reason why. Offering His Services to the Continental ArmyAfter leaving the military, Von Steuben worked for German courts and tried to join the French and Austrian armies but was not successful. When he heard that Benjamin Franklin was in France, he traveled there to offer help to the American Patriots. Franklin liked him and gave him a letter of recommendation to George Washington. Washington welcomed him to the Continental Army and sent him to Valley Forge. The Savior at Valley ForgeAt Valley Forge, Von Steuben made a big impact. He trained the soldiers, teaching them how to fight better by using drills, formations, and proper military structure. The soldiers liked his energy and funny broken English. He helped boost morale during the harsh winter. After Valley Forge, Von Steuben also helped lead troops in the South and played a role at the Battle of Yorktown. He served in the American army until 1784 and died on November 28, 1794. |
