The History of Mississippi

Mississippi has a long history that includes Native American cultures, European exploration, slavery, and the Civil War. It later became a center of the Civil Rights Movement, where people fought for equality and justice.

The Choctaw Nation originally inhabited the Southeastern United States and were known for their mound-building, farming practices, and rich oral traditions. They were among the first tribes to adopt written laws and experienced forced removal along the Trail of Tears in the 1830s.

The Siege of Vicksburg was a major Union victory during the Civil War in which General Ulysses S. Grant surrounded the fortified city for over 40 days, cutting off supplies and bombarding it until Confederate forces surrendered on July 4, 1863. This victory gave the Union full control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in two.
