The Anatomy of a Mystery - Roanoke Island

This fun writing prompt requires students to analyze the mystery of the Lost Colony before detailing a mystery in their own lives, or, another mystery they're familiar with in history, literature, movies, video games, or current events.

Use this Activity:

Discuss - Read the introduction to the prompt to students and ask them to think of a mystery in their own lives, or, in books, movies, or video games they've seen. Reiterate the mystery of the Lost Colony and explain that in history, some mysteries have never been solved such as this one, and the mystery of what happened to Amelia Earhart.
Collaborate - Give students a few minutes to discuss and brainstorm mysteries with their neighbors or tablemates.
Morning Work - The prompt takes most students about 20-25 minutes to complete, making it an ideal solution for morning work.
