The Worst Rule Ever - This fun prompt requires students to relate to how the colonists must have felt after the passage of the Royal Proclamation of 1763, by writing about the worst rule they've ever had to follow.
Dear Mr. Smith, I am a Gentleman! - Students must write a satirical letter to John Smith from the perspective of a gentleman who is being forced to work for his food.
Tough Love - Students learn how John Smith instituted "tough love" at Jamestown and must detail a time in their lives when they've been the recipient of tough love.
Rules, Rules, and More Rules - Students will compare life in Puritan Massachusetts to a fictional character who lived under unreasonable rules by explaining how strict expectations shaped both experiences.
Ahead of Their Time - Students will explain the idea of being “ahead of one’s time” by comparing Anne Hutchinson or Roger Williams to a fictional or modern figure who challenged accepted ideas or unfair rules.
